It’s cold as F&%# but basketball is still a passion for Canadians as we enter the second half of the NBA season. The Toronto Raptors are the nation’s team and finally look like a legitimate threat to the Eastern Conference…we hope.
Basketball is on its way to topping football and the NFL as America’s most watched game. From gossip blogs to hilarious sports analysts to off-the-court scandals, the NBA is a hot ticket business for entertainment, action, and pop-culture. Lebron’s hairline is no longer a story as fans are more concerned with Tweets, exposed DM’s, and anything and everything that Lavar Ball even whispers.
But what is happening in Toronto? After getting almost upset by the Milwaukee Bucks and completely embarrassed by the Cavs, fans were left wondering if the team still had “It” in them (thanks Paul Pierce).
With a crazy year of trades in the league, re-signings, and rookie drafts, the Raptors kept things conservative with a few key moves and a stern warning from Masai the God himself that change is needed immediately.
So, we took to the streets to talk to Raptor fans about their predictions, thoughts, and issues with the squad going in to 2018.
We realized that Raptor fans come in 3 different forms and here’s some of what they had to say:
1) The Hypebeast from the 6
Cheers when they win, quick to call for a tank when they lose
Favourite Player – Demar Derozan or Kyle Lowry (Since they know no other players’ names)
Favourite Saying – “What did I tell you, the Raptors are low key the best still”/ “What did I tell you, the Raptors are washed still”/ “I’m actually a Warriors fan”
“Raptors are up right now? Yeah bro still that’s an East Side ting! We’re definitely going to the finals”
“Wait, you said they lost the last two games? Chill, chill, I’ll bet these Yeezy’s that they get swept first round…they’re real man”
“The boys need Lebron or K.D if we’re ever going to win!”
“Why don’t we have those Supreme armbands I see some players wearing?”
“Y’all on those ‘Home is Toronto’ shirts ahlie?”
“Did I mention that Drake is the greatest thing to ever happen to the Toronto Raptors? OVO for life!”
2) The I-Believe-In-Masai Guy
Believes the Raptors are winning a championship “this year” since 2011
Favourite Player – OG Anunoby (Or whichever rookie that shows more promise than Andrea Bargnani)
Favourite Saying – “The refs are the reason that we lost this game”/ “Honestly, Demar Derozan is pretty much the best shooting guard in the East”
“Put money down now, the Raptors are heading to the Finals this year”
“Our second unit is UNSTOPPABLE!”
“The NBA doesn’t want a Canadian team to win”
“Demar and Kyle are still the best back court in the East and OG will become a young Kawhi Leonard by next year”
“We can easily beat the Cavs, they lost Kyrie and he’s the only reason we lost”
3) The Depressed Dino
Believes the Raptors are a doomed franchise with delusional fans and hopes for the team to be sold to Vancouver
Favourite Player – Vince Carter (Because those were the “good old days” -__- )
Favourite Saying – “Fire the coach and trade (Insert name for whoever had a bad game that day)”
“Meh, the Raps will get in to the playoffs and get swept again”
“We would have lost to Milwaukee last year if Jabari Parker was playing”
“The Raptors only play Iso-ball and Dewayne Casey can’t coach for Sh#t”
“Once Lowry, Derozan, and Ibaka are gone, this team is screwed for another decade”
“I saw that Vince Carter documentary, now that’s when the Raptors were a real team”
I don’t know folks. It looks like Raptors fans come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. But no matter their viewpoint, everyone still tunes in to catch the games whether on a crisp HD stream from Reddit or from an overpaid cable service in this beautiful city.
Let’s cheer on Canada’s squad who take a beating every year from the NBA, naysayers, and fans alike but keep coming back for more with more. We the North!
